I was born and raised in north east Pennsylvania and New Jersey with no exposure to horses, however, I did have an extreme love for the animal. As a young child I read every book I could get my hands on that pertained to horses such as the Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. Later after the introduction of our first brand new TV set into the home at about 7 years old I became intrigued with Western TV series notably Bonanza, Fury & Flicka and so forth. We did not live in the country so I had to pretend that I had a horse of my own. I made my way out West later in life, which I believe was strongly influenced by my love of the horse and the books I read as child and the TV series that I watched which involved the horse and the Old West.
It was not until I was 38 years old that I finally had a horse of my own that I still have today. His name is Copper and he is now 30 years old and I have had him for 20 years. Many thought that we were not a good fit…a green rider and an Arabian horse. I can only sum it up by saying that due to his intelligence, athletic ability and sweet personality he taught me more than I him. He has taken care of me during dangerous trail rides and awesome parades. I truly love him.
(Sadly Copper passed away this year and will not be with us at the Rose Parade. May he be there in spirit and live in green pastures forever) |
