Parades

Despite the long hours of preparation,
the Victorian Ladies just LOVE the parades!

Here come the Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Society. These women present living history from the 1880’s Victorian Era and portray how cosmopolitan women from 120 years ago might have dressed. They ride in colorful, one of a kind, custom-made gowns and matching parasols. Many of the Ladies have done the designing and the sewing of their own elaborate costumes and there can be as much as
40 hours of labor that go into a single dress.
The Victorian Era was named after Queen Victoria, who held the longest reign in history, from 1837 to 1901. The upper class royalty were the trendsetters of fashion during this time and the role of Victorian women was to show off their family's wealth through the trendy garments they wore; The busier the dress, the more money it represented. Sometimes dresses such as these
could weigh 25 or more pounds.
The Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Society is a sisterhood of women from East San Diego. All the Ladies have a Rose name that tells a little about her and they are riding various breeds of horses such as Quarter Horses, Andalusians, Peruvian Pasos, Paints, and Missouri Fox Trotters. When not riding parades, the Ladies do various entertaining for charity: including skits, staged train robberies, cotillions, costume contests and other old west events. For more information,
see their website, www.victorianroses.org
